Germany extended its bilateral cooperation to India in the field of environment management through its ASEM (Advisory Services in Environment Management) program since 2002. It was agreed that Germany would provide technology and knowledge support to India for managing its environment on sustainable basis. The first phase of this program started in May 2002 with Ministry of Environment and Forest, Govt of India. The thrust areas of the program have been: · Sustainable Urban Environment · Sustainable Industrial Development · Sustainable Environmental Governance · Sustainable Consumption and Consumer Protection Considering the huge success of the ASEM program it was decided to extend the second phase of the program to 2012 with a focus on implementation of international environmental conventions through urban and industrial development.
